Andøya in May

Every year we go to Andøya in the middle of May. It is a very nice area during spring, and at this time of the year Pink-footed and Barnacle Geese gather in the thousands on their last pit-stop on the way to Spitsbergen. This year we were a little late, and the Pink-footed had already left. But a couple of thousand Barnacle Geese was still on the Island.

Andøya is also a favourite spot to look for Short-eared Owl, and they did not let us down this year either.

On a small beach we found a good concentration of shorebirds: Ringed Plovers, Dunlins, Turnstones and Sanderlings.

Male bramblings in full summer plumage and the first Bluethroat of the year gave solid evidence that spring is on the way!

The Wigeon is a typical duck in the wtlands.

An adult White-tailed Eagle keeps a watchful eye over its territory.
