Mid November we took some days off from birding and joined a research team studying Killer Whale behaviour at Skjervøy in Troms. It was a truly amazing trip, with many close encounters with pods of this majestic creatures.
The Killer Whales are regularly seen feeding alongside Humpback Whales, a phenomenon not often seen elsewhere. They both feed on the Atlantic Herring, but with quite different feeding techniques.
On one occasion we also had feeding Fin Whales. They came out of nothing – a 25 meter long individual suddenly broke the surface sideways few meters away from some rather surprised snorkelers! On the picture, the fluke in front of a snorkeler.
