Røst – week 38

Heavy wind and frequent rain showers made week a difficult one for birdwatching, but a few new Yellow-browed Warblers (gulbrynsanger) were the highlights of the week.

The Rosy Starling (rosenstær) also held its fort at the feeder at Ystnes.

Due to winds from west to south-west, we spent plenty of time in the shelter for seabird-watching, but with rather disappointing results. Only one Sooty Shearwater (grålire) so far in September. Gannets (havsule), however, were plentiful.

A few flocks of Brants (ringgås) passed on their way southwards.

An adult White-tailed Eagle (havørn) inspecting the shoreline by the seabird shelter.

Not many waders to see, but a few flocks of Ruff (brushane) are still hanging around.

Bar-tailed Godwits (lappspove) also feed in small flocks in the wetlands.

Merlins  (dvergfalk) have been around all week; one was even ringed when the wind calmed down and we were able to have the nets open at the end of the week.

Highlights from the few hours of ringing was the first Barred Warbler (hauksanger) and the third Common Rosefinch (rosenfink) for the season.
