Røst – week 40

Week 40 is usually reconned the peak of the fall migration, and quite a few birders came to the island. Unfortunately, the weather has not been favourable, and by the end of the week we experienced what was left of storm Amy.

However it started fairly good, and the star of the week was a splendid adult Gyrfalcon (jaktfalk) that paid us a one-day visit.

Despite low numbers of passerines, a Little Bunting (dvergspurv) was a highlight.

A Red-backed Shrike (tornskate) was also a good find.

The search through the regular pipits, revealed a late Tree Pipit (trepiplerke).

At least tree different Yellow-broved Warblers (gulbrynsanger) were seen, one was ringed (the second for the season).

Another good catch was a Reed Warbler (rørsanger) – a rare species this far north.

The Marsh Warbler (myrsanger) from last week was also recaptured and gave an excellent opportunity to compare these two species.

The long staying Barred Warbler (hauksanger) was also recaptured, more tha tree weeks after it was first ringed.

The flow of Wheatears (steinskvett) continued – all big and bulky and suspected Greenlanders.

Blackcaps (munk) have arrived in good numbers.

Also Goldcrests (fuglekonge) have blown in – amazing to see how these small birds handle the heavy winds foraging in the scrubs.

The first Snow Buntings (snøspurv) have arrived the island.

Not many waders left, but flocks of European Golden Plovers (heilo) are found around the island.

Common Snipes (enkeltbekkasin) are also present in good numbers.

Looking for snipes with thermal binoculars when they feed at night is an exiting sport, and we were lucky to find a single Jack Snipe (kvartbekkasin).

The two Taiga Bean Geese (taigasædgås) remained on the island throughout the week.

The population of Grey Herons (gråhegre) has increased on the island over the recent years. In stormy weather they seek shelter under the stockfish racks.

Wind directions were not favourable for any exiting seabird-watching, but the feeding Gannets (havsule) are always entertaining.
