Winter birding in the Lofoten Islands

mid February – early April

Steadily increasing hours of daylight through the winter provide opportunities for winter birding in Lofoten and VesterĂ¥len. Andenes in the north and Røst in the south of the region are two of the best spots in Norway for arctic gulls. The Western seaboard supports good numbers of wintering arctic ducks and divers. 

Target species: Whooper Swan, King Eider, Velvet Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Common Loon, Yellow-billed Loon, Red-necked Grebe, Purple Sandpiper, Willow Ptarmigan, Rock Ptarmigan, White-tailed Eagle, Golden Eagle, Gyrfalcon, Glaucous Gull, Iceland Gull.

Irregular or invasion species: Northern Hawk Owl, Grey-headed Woodpecker, Pine Grosbeak
